Kalmar County parties present healthcare and transport election promises

As regional elections approach in Kalmar County, political parties are presenting competing manifestos focused on healthcare and social welfare. The Christian Democrats (KD) have introduced a ‘patient contract’ featuring five specific rights. This includes a guarantee of timely care, where patients would be transferred to other providers if the region fails to meet healthcare guarantees, ensuring patients do not have to manage their own care processes.

In contrast, the Social Democrats (S) have proposed making public transport free for youth aged 13 to 19. This initiative, aimed at promoting sustainability and social equality, is estimated to cost approximately eight million SEK annually. The proposal seeks to support families facing economic hardship by providing unlimited travel via Länstrafiken.

Evaluations of previous election promises show mixed results in the region. While some initiatives, such as providing free work shoes for healthcare staff, have been implemented, other goals like introducing school breakfasts or specific citizen budgets have faced economic and logistical challenges.
