Kalmar County private wells show high bacterial levels
Data compiled by Watersprint from the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU) reveals that 38 percent of tested private wells in Kalmar County contain high levels of bacteria. These findings indicate that the water is either unfit for consumption or suitable only with remarks.
Experts emphasize that individuals using private wells are responsible for maintaining water quality. Because environmental factors such as heavy rain, flooding, drought, or nearby land changes can alter water composition, continuous testing is necessary. The Swedish Food Agency recommends testing at least every three years, though annual testing is advised for households with children under five or those serving multiple households.
Contaminants of concern include chemical substances like arsenic, lead, and manganese, as well as bacteria such as E. coli, which can cause gastrointestinal illness. Vulnerable groups, including young children, the elderly, and the sick, are at higher risk of illness.
