Kalmar municipality faces million-krona settlements over personnel issues
Kalmar municipality is facing criticism following reports of multi-million krona settlements used to terminate employees within its social services department. One specific settlement, involving approximately 20.5 monthly salaries, cost the municipality over two million kronor including fees.
Critics, including members of the Sweden Democrats, have questioned the lack of written investigations prior to these agreements and whether the political leadership was adequately informed. While the municipality has attributed budget deficits to increased needs in foster care and financial assistance, opponents argue that the millions spent on ending employment contracts represent a failure in personnel policy and a waste of taxpayer funds.
Separately, the Swedish Union of Commerce (Handelsanställdas förbund) has highlighted broader systemic issues regarding leadership and work environments. A 2025 member survey indicates that 45 percent of retail employees and 43 percent of warehouse and e-commerce workers report significant problems with poor or deficient leadership at their workplaces.
