Kalogria Lagoon: Thousands of dead fish wash ashore

Thousands of dead fish have washed up along the shores of the Kalogria Lagoon, creating a widespread phenomenon where the coastline appeared white due to the volume of deceased fish. While the exact cause of this specific mass mortality event is still being investigated, experts suggest it may be linked to anoxia, or a sudden depletion of dissolved oxygen in the water.

Several environmental factors can contribute to such events in shallow ecosystems like the Strofylia National Park. These include eutrophication caused by fertilizer runoff leading to algae blooms, high water temperatures that hold less oxygen, and declining water levels due to evaporation or drought. Additionally, the blockage of natural channels connecting the lagoon to the sea can prevent the necessary renewal of oxygenated seawater. Laboratory tests and on-site inspections are required to determine the precise cause of this incident, which has raised significant concerns regarding the health of this protected ecosystem in Western Greece.
