Kalundborg Refinery targeted by climate activists in Denmark

Hundreds of activists and local citizens gathered to demonstrate in front of the Kalundborg Refinery in Denmark. The protest, part of the ‘Bryd Kæden’ campaign, aims to highlight Denmark’s reliance on fossil fuels and its role in global supply chains.

Owned by the Swiss-based Kleisch Group, the refinery processes approximately 5.5 million barrels of crude oil annually and accounts for 15% of Denmark’s energy supply. Activists from Den Grønne Ungdomsbevægelse (The Green Youth Movement) criticized the facility as a primary example of fossil fuel dependency.

In addition to protesting oil use, the Havnsø-Føllenslev Environmental Association raised concerns regarding Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) plans. The association expressed fears over the proposal to store 200,000 tons of CO2 underground, citing long-term risks of environmental disasters and CO2 poisoning for local residents. Speakers at the event included Member of Parliament Elise Sydendal and author Carsten Jensen.
