Kalvakuntla Kavitha proposes cofferdam to divert Pranahita river water
Kalvakuntla Kavitha, chief of the Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS), has proposed the construction of a 93-metre-high cofferdam near the Kannepalli pump house to divert Pranahita river water to reservoirs. The proposal aims to address drought conditions and protect crops across approximately 1.1 crore acres of farmland.
Kavitha stated that nearly 2 tmc-ft of water flows through the Pranahita daily without being fully utilized. The proposed cofferdam, estimated to cost ₹25 crore, could potentially be completed within 45 days and would divert water to the Annaram and Sundilla reservoirs, bypassing the damaged Medigadda barrage.
Kavitha set a deadline of late November for the state government to begin work, warning of protests at the Kannepalli pump house if the demand is not met. She also urged the government to ensure free electricity and additional power supplies to protect cultivated crops and called for the early completion of the Chinna Kaleshwaram project.
