Kalymnos Island Wildfire Advances Toward Chali, Prompting Aerial and Ground Reinforcements

A large wildfire broke out on the Greek island of Kalymnos on the afternoon of 30 July 2026, igniting in the Voutsani area. The fire spread rapidly southeast toward the village of Chali, driven by strong winds that hampered suppression efforts.

Three firefighting aircraft were dispatched to the island, while helicopters supplied water drops. Ground crews from the local fire service, volunteers from Kalymnos, and additional teams from the EMODE disaster‑relief agency (arriving by helicopter from Rhodes) and firefighters from Kos supported the operation. Mayor Giannis Mastrokoukos of Kalymnos warned that the situation remained critical and that the entire municipal and state apparatus was on alert. Initial assessments reported damage to one house and a car, with further inspections pending.

Authorities issued a precautionary alert for the Vathy area, though the active front was moving away from that locality. Rough sea conditions limited aerial water‑pickup operations, forcing aircraft to return to base.
