Kamakura Hanko to hold memorial service for used seals
Kamakura Hanko, a seal specialty store in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, will hold its annual ‘Insho Kuyo’ (seal memorial service) on October 14, 2026. The service is designed for individuals who are unsure how to dispose of seals belonging to deceased relatives or those that have become unusable due to damage.
Recognizing the cultural belief that seals hold a person's spirit or represent their identity, the store facilitates a ritual process. Collected seals—including personal and corporate registered seals, bank seals, and general seals—will undergo prayers at a shrine in Kamakura. Following this, they will be sent to the World Heritage site Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto to be enshrined.
Applications for the 2026 service must be submitted by October 6, 2026, via in-store visit or mail. While the service is free, voluntary donations are accepted. The service excludes self-inking stamps (Shachihata), rubber stamps, and accessories like cases or ink pads.
