Kamal Haasan urges Election Commission to meet Opposition MPs
Makkal Needhi Maiam founder and Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan has called on Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar to meet with Opposition MPs at Samvidhan Bhavan. Haasan emphasized that the Election Commission must engage with elected representatives to address concerns regarding its credibility and to reaffirm its independence and impartiality.
The call for dialogue follows an escalating standoff between the Election Commission and Opposition parties concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition groups are demanding increased transparency in the revision process.
Protests have erupted in New Delhi, with INDIA bloc MPs attempting to march toward Jantar Mantar. During these demonstrations, Delhi Police detained several leaders, including Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. Gandhi expressed his intention to continue the agitation, stating that attempts to deny meetings with the Election Commission would not suppress the ‘will of the people’.
