Kamala Harris leads 2028 Democratic primary polls amid midterm campaign dilemmas
Kamala Harris remains a leading figure for the Democratic Party despite the challenges of the 2024 election loss. According to The Center Square Voters' Voice Poll, Harris has maintained approximately 30% support among Democrats and left-leaning Independents for a potential 2028 presidential primary. She shows particular strength among Black voters (49%) and voters aged 18-29 (47%). Other notable contenders include Governor Gavin Newsom, whose support has plateaued at 14%, and Pete Buttigieg, who saw support rise to 12% in recent polling.
However, Harris's presence presents a strategic dilemma for Democrats running in the 2026 midterm cycle. Some candidates in competitive or red-leaning states are distancing themselves from her to avoid being tied to the previous administration. For instance, Alaska Democrat Mary Peltola rejected a Harris-led fundraising email, and Iowa gubernatorial nominee Rob Sand's campaign indicated they do not want an endorsement or involvement from Harris.
