Kamala Harris opposes SAVE America Act voter ID requirements

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has voiced opposition to the SAVE America Act, a piece of legislation championed by President Donald J. Trump. In a social media video, Harris argued that the act would create obstacles for voter registration by requiring proof of identity, such as a passport or birth certificate.

Critics of Harris's remarks noted that the legislation does not limit acceptable documentation strictly to passports or birth certificates, but also allows for other forms of identification, including certain REAL ID-compliant and military IDs.

The SAVE America Act, which aims to require documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration, reportedly has 62% support among likely voters, according to a Rasmussen Reports survey, while 33% oppose it. Harris also referenced the Supreme Court's Callais decision, suggesting it weakened the Voting Rights Act.
