Kamala Harris urges voter engagement amid new restrictions
Former Vice President Kamala Harris is urging Americans to remain active in the political process, warning of increasing barriers to voting ahead of upcoming elections. During a voter-organizing tour in New Orleans, Harris highlighted concerns regarding new voting restrictions and legal changes across the country.
Harris specifically pointed to laws enacted in 19 states that she claims make voting more difficult, as well as federal proposals like the SAVE Act, which would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration. She also referenced the Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais, which altered the legal landscape regarding Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and racial considerations in congressional redistricting.
Addressing a student rally, Harris emphasized the importance of civic participation, particularly regarding redistricting issues in Louisiana. She encouraged citizens to verify their registration status, utilize early voting and mail-in options where available, and stay informed about how political district lines are drawn.
