Kamala Sharma-Wing becomes first ADF Hindu chaplain

Kamala Sharma-Wing has become the first full-time Hindu chaplain for the Australian Defence Force (ADF). Her appointment marks a significant shift in the ADF chaplaincy, which has traditionally focused on Christian denominations and Jewish chaplains.

The move reflects the increasing cultural and religious diversity within the Australian Navy and broader military services. Sharma-Wing’s role follows the 2022 appointment of Flight Lieutenant Abdul Kader, who became the Air Force’s first Imam.

Establishing this position required creating a new pathway, as there was no existing Australian framework or Hindu representation on the Religious Advisory Committee to the Services. For her contributions to the community and her historic role, Sharma-Wing has been named a finalist in the 2026 ACT Women’s Awards.
