Kamchatka Peninsula hit by magnitude 6.9 earthquake

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude between 6.9 and 7.0 struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Friday, October 16, 2026. The seismic event occurred at approximately 15:35 local time at a depth ranging from 130 to 152 kilometers.

The epicenter was located on land, approximately 76 kilometers northeast of Ozernovskiy and between the Opala and Ksudach volcanoes. In the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, residents reportedly evacuated their apartments as a precaution. The tremors were felt with an intensity of up to five points in some areas, causing objects to fall and light fixtures to swing.

Initial reports indicate no casualties or significant material damage have been recorded. The US National Tsunami Warning Center and other agencies confirmed there is no tsunami threat following the quake. The region remains highly active due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, near the junction of the North American, Eurasian, and Pacific tectonic plates.
