Kamenz Airfield opens new hangar for aviation technology projects

A new 1,500-square-meter hangar has officially opened at the Kamenz Airfield in Saxony, Germany, to support aviation development, assembly, and testing. The project represents a 3-million-euro investment by the company MITEB, supported by 850,000 euros in funding from the Free State of Saxony.

MITEB is utilizing the facility to develop several advanced technologies, including an electric motor glider and an unmanned airship. The 12-meter-long airship, weighing only 25 kilograms, is designed for remote sensing and infrastructure monitoring. According to MITEB Managing Director Dr. Udo Berthold, the airship’s ability to operate without the turbulence caused by drones or helicopters makes it ideal for detecting methane leaks or monitoring high-voltage power lines and gas pipelines.

The development comes amid efforts by the Saxon Ministry of the Interior to establish regulations for surveillance flights over critical infrastructure. Saxony's Infrastructure Minister, Regina Kraushaar, attended the inauguration, noting the potential to transform the airfield into a cluster for lightweight construction and aviation technology, leveraging decades of expertise in fiber-composite materials.
