Kamila Skolimowska: Remembering the Polish Olympic Hammer Throw Champion

Kamila Skolimowska, the Polish Olympic hammer throw champion who won gold at age 17, passed away on February 18, 2009, at the age of 26. The athlete collapsed during a training camp in Vila Real de Santo António, Portugal, after experiencing several health issues in the preceding months.

Prior to her death, Skolimowska had reported symptoms including breathing difficulties, dizziness, hip pain, and numbness in her leg. During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she had fainted, an incident which doctors at the time attributed to smog.

Following her collapse in Portugal, medical teams attempted to resuscitate her for approximately one hour, but she died while en route to the hospital. Preliminary autopsy results indicated that the cause of death was a pulmonary embolism resulting from thrombotic complications. She was buried in Warsaw at the Powązki Military Cemetery.
