Kamila Valieva loses neutral athlete status
The International Skating Union (ISU) has revoked the neutral athlete status of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva and teammate Mark Kondratiuk, effectively barring them from international competition.
Valieva, who was at the center of a major doping controversy during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, had recently been granted neutral status for the current season under rules allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete without national symbols. However, the status was withdrawn following concerns that the athletes may have breached criteria regarding the support of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Specifically, reports indicate the Ukrainian Figure Skating Federation raised objections regarding Valieva’s affiliation with a club led by Tatiana Navka, who is under international sanctions.
The ISU is expected to rule on appeals from both Valieva and Kondratiuk by the middle of next week. If the decision is upheld, the athletes have the option to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
