Kammergericht Berlin overturns ruling against Correctiv

The Kammergericht Berlin has ruled in favor of the investigative platform Correctiv in its appeal against a previous lower court decision. The case concerns reporting related to the so-called Potsdam meeting, where right-wing and far-right groups gathered in November 2023.

The specific legal dispute involved a statement made by jurist Ulrich Vosgerau regarding the freedom of choice for young voters of Turkish descent. While the Berlin Regional Court had previously prohibited the phrasing used by Correctiv in its reporting, the Kammergericht has now classified the reporting as a permissible expression of opinion.

Correctiv’s editor-in-chief, Justus von Daniels, described the ruling as a ‘important signal’ despite the specific subject matter. The lawyer for Vosgerau noted that the judgment is not yet legally binding and that legal remedies are being reviewed.
