Kampala expands electric bus fleet to ease traffic congestion

The Kampala metropolitan area is expanding its electric public transport network with the launch of 15 new electric buses serving the Kira Municipality in the Wakiso district. Manufactured locally by Kiira Motors Corporation and operated by E-Bus Express Kira Limited, these vehicles aim to reduce traffic congestion and lower emissions.

The total fleet of Kayoola electric buses has grown to 23 units. The service includes new routes such as Ntinda–Najjera–Kira–Kitukutwe–Kiwologoma–Nakwero, Ntinda–Naalya–Kyaliwajjala–Namugongo–Sonde, and Ntinda–Kisasi–Kyanja–Kungu.

In partnership with MTN Uganda, the service features a digital payment system allowing passengers to use mobile money via USSD codes for fares. Additionally, the buses provide onboard Wi-Fi to enhance the commuter experience. Minsa Kabanda, the Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, noted that the initiative is a significant step toward modernizing public transport and embracing clean energy.
