Kampala–Entebbe Expressway launches mobile money toll payments
The Uganda Ministry of Works and Transport, in partnership with MTN Uganda, has launched mobile money payment options for toll fees on the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway (KEE). The service is currently available at the Busega, Kajjansi, and Mpala toll plazas via designated lanes 4 and 5.
To use the system, motorists provide their mobile number to a toll attendant and receive a payment prompt on their phone. Once the user enters their mobile money PIN and payment is confirmed, the vehicle is permitted to proceed. This initiative aims to modernize toll collection and improve convenience as traffic volumes on the expressway have risen from approximately 21,000 vehicles per day in 2022 to roughly 29,000 per day in 2026.
The Ministry also announced plans to introduce an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system across all toll lanes during the 2027/28 financial year. This future system is expected to feature automated number plate recognition, prepayments, and self-service options.
