Netherlands logistics face strikes and infrastructure restrictions

The Netherlands is facing several logistical and infrastructure challenges affecting its transport networks. In the Port of Rotterdam, unions FNV and CNV have called for a strike on September 4 from 11:15 to 19:00 in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Zeeland to protest government social security plans. While the immediate impact is expected to be limited, economist Bart Kuipers warns that such actions can damage the port's reputation for reliability, a key factor for major shipping lines.

Simultaneously, inland shipping and road transport are under pressure. Rijkswaterstaat is implementing weight and axle load restrictions on the Houtribbruggen (N307) due to structural safety concerns, forcing heavy vehicles to take longer detours. Additionally, the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal will face nighttime closures for large vessels due to a shortage of shipping pilots.

In the eastern region, the closure of the Twentekanaal and Almelo-de Haandrik canal has shifted approximately 5,000 trucks per week onto provincial roads. Meanwhile, the municipality of Kampen and the Dutch Association of Inland Shipping are urging the government to invest in the N50 road and local port infrastructure to ensure reliable goods transport, especially as drought-induced low water levels make waterways less reliable.
