Kamrul Hasan Lipu holds first solo exhibition in Yokohama

Bangladeshi artist Kamrul Hasan Lipu is presenting his first solo exhibition in Japan, titled ‘DOT: The Beginning of Everything’ (or ‘Bindu Theke Srishty’), at Gallery Shimizu in Yokohama. The exhibition, which opened on 20 October and runs until 25 October, features 41 paintings that explore Bengali culture, memory, and identity.

Lipu’s work utilizes acrylic, oil, and mixed media to blend figurative imagery with abstraction. Central themes include women’s faces, water lilies, sari patterns, and folk-art elements such as rickshaw painting ornamentation. His pieces, including ‘The Bede Girl’, ‘Madhabi’, and ‘Mrinalini’, aim to evoke the sensitivity, dignity, and emotional resilience found in Bengali life.

The exhibition opening was attended by Matsudo City Council member Mir Kazue, Japanese artist Asano Yasunori, paper-cutting artist Mita Chikako, and Gallery Shimizu representative Shimizu Kazue. The artist’s philosophy, reflected in the exhibition title, posits that a dot develops into a line, which forms a shape, eventually creating the visible world.
