Assam highway collision kills seven people
A fatal head-on collision between a passenger minibus and a truck on National Highway 27 in Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan district has resulted in seven deaths. The accident occurred near Tetelia in the Nalgedra area between Sonapur and Guwahati.
Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the 26-seater passenger vehicle, which was traveling from Nagaon toward Guwahati, lost control after hitting a large pothole, causing a tire to burst. The vehicle then crossed the median divider and struck an oncoming truck. While four people died at the scene, three others later succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
At least seven other individuals were injured in the crash. Following the incident, local residents staged protests on the highway, citing poor road maintenance and dangerous potholes as recurring causes of accidents in the area. Protesters threatened to block the nearby National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) toll plaza at Sonapur until repairs are conducted. The collision also caused significant traffic congestion, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded for several hours.
