Kamsar elevated to prefecture status in Guinea

Kamsar, a major industrial and mining hub in the Boké region, has been officially elevated to the status of a prefecture following a decree issued by President Mamadi Doumbouya on August 20, 2026. This administrative reorganization marks the end of a long-standing demand from local residents who previously had to travel to Boké for administrative services.

Local leaders and citizens have expressed significant enthusiasm regarding the change. Sékou Oumar Sylla, the mayor of Kamsar, described the decision as a historic achievement that rewards the long-term efforts of the community. Residents anticipate that the new status will decentralize administrative activities and bring government services closer to the population.

Beyond administrative convenience, there are high expectations for economic development. As a significant mining and port zone with a population of approximately 207,127, Kamsar residents hope that the local administration will now be able to retain and directly manage the mining revenues generated within the area, rather than seeing those funds directed to Boké. This shift is expected to facilitate better investment in local infrastructure and public services.
