Kamukunji Historical Grounds undergo major redevelopment in Nairobi

The Kamukunji Historical Grounds in Nairobi have been transformed into a modern multipurpose facility as part of the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Project. The redevelopment aims to preserve the site’s historical importance, specifically its role as the birthplace of the 1990 Saba Saba movement, which was instrumental in Kenya’s transition toward multiparty democracy and civil liberties.

The upgraded site now includes various sports and recreational amenities, such as an 11-a-side football pitch, seven-a-side and multipurpose fields, basketball courts, and a boxing ring. For community wellbeing and education, the facility features children’s play areas, a mental health corner, improved sanitation, and a resource centre containing a library, social hall, and digital museum.
