Kamzy Gunaratnam appointed Norway’s Minister of Transport

Kamzy Gunaratnam, a Sri Lankan-born politician and survivor of the 2011 Utøya terrorist attack, has been appointed Norway’s Minister of Transport in the government of Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Gunaratnam, a member of the Labour Party, has a long political career in Norway, having served on the Oslo City Council and in the Storting.

Following her appointment, Gunaratnam has drawn attention for her advocacy regarding Nynorsk, one of Norway’s official written languages. Despite facing criticism for not holding a driver's license, the organization Noregs Mållag presented her with a symbolic Nynorsk-language driver's license to honor her efforts to promote the language in schools and public life.

Her political trajectory has also sparked discussions regarding integration and the cultural experiences of immigrants in Norwegian society.
