Kanaan Deer Calls for Mental‑Health Reform After Family Tragedy in Chicago

Kanaan Deer, son of the late Cook County Commissioner and psychologist Dennis Deer, publicly recounted the April deaths of his mother, Barbara Deer, and his twin brother, Kaleb Deer. Kaleb, who had recently been diagnosed with a mental health disorder, killed their mother before taking his own life. Deer said the loss was "very painful" and "very traumatic," and he hopes sharing the story will spark broader conversation about mental‑health care and crisis support.

Deer and his younger sister are expanding their family nonprofit, Juneteenth Illinois, to provide additional mental‑health resources. He is also partnering with Illinois state Representative La Shawn Ford on legislation and funding aimed at supporting families in crisis, emphasizing the need for stronger mental‑health services and early intervention.
