Kandinsky painting Betonte Ecken set for record auction at Christie’s
Wassily Kandinsky’s colorful abstraction, Betonte Ecken (1922–23), is scheduled for auction at Christie’s New York on November 17. The work carries an estimate of $60 million to $80 million and is guaranteed to achieve a record-setting price, surpassing the artist’s current auction record of $44.8 million set in 2023.
Measuring just over four feet square, the painting was created in Weimar, Germany, while Kandinsky was teaching at the Bauhaus. The piece has a significant provenance, having previously been part of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum collection until 1964. Other notable owners include Hilla Rebay, New York art dealer Stephen Hahn, and Boston collectors Sandra and David Bakalar.
Kandinsky’s market remains strong, with his top 14 auction works all exceeding $20 million. Recently, Christie’s London also secured the artist’s third-highest price with the sale of Das bunte Leben for $41.5 million.
