Kaneshie drainage project to begin September 7

The Greater Accra Resilience Integrated Development (GARID) Project will begin constructing a large-scale underground stormwater drain in the Kaneshie enclave on September 7, 2026. The project aims to enhance flood control in Accra following a major flood disaster in June that resulted in at least 39 deaths.

The new infrastructure will consist of a 10-meter-wide, double-cell rectangular drain spanning approximately 1.95 kilometers from Pamprom Junction to First Light Junction along the Dr. Busia Highway. This new system is designed to replace two existing 1.2-meter diameter pipes to better manage heavy rainfall.

Construction is expected to last from September 2026 through October 2027. Due to the required excavation, significant traffic disruptions are anticipated on the Dr. Busia Highway, a critical corridor connecting the central business district to western suburbs like Dansoman and Mallam. Authorities have advised motorists to use alternative routes, such as the Obetsebi Interchange to Mataheko, to minimize inconvenience.
