Kangimi Dam structural concerns spark flood warnings and government denials
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has issued a warning to the Federal Government regarding structural distress and visible cracks at the Kangimi Dam in Igabi Local Government Area, Kaduna State. NSEMA Director General Abdullahi Baba-Arah stated that the defective dam poses a significant flood risk to downstream communities in Kaduna, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory.
In response, the Kaduna State Government has dismissed claims of imminent collapse, asserting that the dam remains intact and functional. Officials noted that structural concerns appearing in social media images date back to 2015/2016 and were addressed through remedial works. The state ministry is currently procuring modern safety equipment, including automated water-level gauges and early-warning sirens, to enhance monitoring capabilities.
