Kannon religious festivals offer rare access to cultural treasures in Japan

Various religious and cultural events involving Kannon statues are taking place across Japan. In Sano City, the Hikichiyama Hinukadera Kannon-do held a special half-open exhibition on October 3 and 4, 2026. This event allowed visitors to view the Kannon Bosatsu statue directly and provided a special viewing of a nationally designated important cultural property, a bronze lantern dating back to 1545.

In Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, the ‘Kannon no Sato Furusato Matsuri’ is scheduled for October 18. The festival will feature 26 locations across the Kohoku region, offering public access to Kannon statues that are typically closed to the public, including the National Treasure Eleven-faced Kannon Standing Statue.
