Kano health agency sanctions 100 facilities and shuts 35

The Kano State Private Health Institutions Management Agency (PHIMA) has sanctioned over 100 private health facilities and shut down 35 others due to regulatory violations within the last 12 months. Acting Director-General Hajiya Khadijah Sa’id reported that common infractions included operating without licenses, failing to renew annual registrations, and employing unqualified personnel.

Facilities found guilty of gross violations may face permanent delisting, and the responsible proprietors could be barred from registering future facilities using their professional licenses. PHIMA’s regulatory oversight extends to hospitals, clinics, laboratories, dental centers, and practitioners of traditional or alternative medicine.

In a separate strategic effort, PHIMA has convened meetings with health stakeholders to strengthen the reporting of maternal and perinatal deaths. The agency aims to integrate private health facilities into the state’s Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPCDSR) network to improve data accuracy, timely notification, and coordination between the private sector and the State Ministry of Health.
