Kano Hisbah launches crackdown amid religious freedom legal rulings
The Kano State Hisbah Board has launched ‘Operation Kano First’, a new initiative aimed at cracking down on immoral acts across Kano State. To support this crackdown, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf donated 10 operational vehicles and 50 motorcycles to the board to increase its mobility and presence in monitoring public spaces and responding to complaints.
Deputy Commander-General Mujahid Aminuddeen stated that the board will patrol major roads to enforce Sharia-related laws and promote moral conduct. The Hisbah Board is mandated by the state government to enforce Sharia laws and mediate disputes.
In a related legal development, a Nigerian court has barred the Hisbah from arresting a Christian convert in Kano over matters of faith and a refusal of forced marriage. The ruling comes amid ongoing concerns regarding the Hisbah’s enforcement of Islamic moral codes, including past allegations of interference with Christian practitioners and incidents involving religious conversions in northern Nigeria.
