Kano poultry farmers request government subsidies for feed and medication
Poultry farmers in Kano State are calling on the government to provide subsidized feed and medication to combat soaring production costs. The rising prices of essential inputs are making it increasingly difficult for producers to maintain profitability and sustain their operations.
Specific price increases reported include Ultima Plus feed rising from N20,000 to N23,000 and Ultima feed increasing from N18,000 to N21,000. Other feed types, such as Chikun and Hybrid, have also seen significant price hikes. Additionally, the cost of day-old chicks has risen from a range of N500–N700 to approximately N2,000.
Farmers noted that these high entry costs are discouraging new participants from entering the industry. Beyond input costs, farmers are also preparing for the upcoming harmattan season, which requires additional spending on lighting and heating equipment to ensure bird health and growth.
