Kano State addresses waste management and sanitation challenges

Sanitation authorities and waste management workers in Kano State are addressing challenges regarding refuse disposal and environmental cleanliness.

The Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board has issued a warning to roadside traders and commercial operators against dumping waste in drains and on roads. Specifically, vendors selling food items like maize along major thoroughfares such as France Road and Zaria Road are required to provide waste receptacles. The board noted that organic waste, such as maize husks, often obstructs waterways and causes contamination. Officials warned that non-compliant individuals may face prosecution in specialized environmental sanitation courts.

Simultaneously, the Gidan Kowa Da Akwai Association of Human Waste Evacuators has appealed to the government for more resources. Ibrahim Muhammad, the association's chairman, cited a shortage of trucks and a lack of designated disposal sites as primary obstacles. He noted that the Janguza site is currently the only available location, as other previous sites have been encroached upon by residential buildings. The association is seeking access to loans or government-provided vehicles to support the livelihoods of its more than 1,000 members and improve public health services.
