Kano State agricultural leaders warn of farmer-herder clashes

Agricultural leaders in Kano State are warning of potential escalations in clashes between farmers and herders as the harvest season approaches. Abdullahi Ali Maibiredi, Chairman of the Kano chapter of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), noted that these disputes have historically led to loss of life, property destruction, and livelihood damage. Maibiredi reported losing approximately 85 percent of his crops last year and called for urgent government intervention to rebuild trust between communities.

Captain Abdullahi Bakoji of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) expressed concern regarding the early return of transhumant herders from Niger due to water shortages. He warned that herders may return to Kano before harvesting is complete, increasing the risk of conflict.

In a separate development, Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sabo Nanono, announced that the Federal Government has registered 5.7 million farmers nationwide. The initiative aims to connect genuine farmers directly to government support and improve organization within the agricultural sector.
