Kano State approves new salary structure for two universities
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved a new salary structure for academic and non-academic staff at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH) and Northwest University, Kano. The decision follows recommendations from a state executive council committee to domesticate the Federal Government’s salary package for federal universities.
The new remuneration package will take effect retrospectively from January 2026, with payments commencing in September 2026. The total monthly financial implication is estimated at N391.85 million, amounting to approximately N4.70 billion annually. Specifically, ADUSTECH will require N228.20 million monthly, while Northwest University will require N163.65 million monthly.
To fund this transition, the state government has approved N1.57 billion in the 2026 Supplementary Budget to cover payments from September to December. Additionally, N3.13 billion will be provided in the 2027 Budget to settle arrears accumulated between January and August 2026. The government stated these measures aim to ensure industrial harmony, improve worker welfare, and reduce pay disparities between state and federal institutions. The Governor also approved the consideration of visitation panels for these and other tertiary institutions to enhance accountability and management.
