Kano State enacts private school fee limits and pauses tax payments

The Kano State House of Assembly approved the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which caps private primary and secondary school fee increases at 10% and requires consultation with parent‑teacher associations before any rise. The amendment also lowers the board’s statutory charge on schools from 15% to 5% and sets qualification criteria for the board’s executive secretary. The bill now awaits Governor Abba Yusuf’s assent.

Separately, the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board issued a circular directing all private and voluntary schools to suspend payment of the statutory 10% tax for the first term of the 2026/27 academic session. The previous tax assessment expired on 31 July 2026, and a fresh assessment will be based on a new data‑collection and verification exercise across the state’s 44 local government areas. Schools are instructed to await new assessment notices before making any tax payments.
