Kano State establishes committee to reform Almajiri education

The Kano State Government has established a 20-member Advisory Committee on Almajiri Education and Welfare Reform. The panel is tasked with reviewing the operations and welfare of Tsangaya schools across the state to integrate traditional Qur’anic education into a broader framework.

Chaired by Attorney-General Abdulkarim Kabir Maude, the committee will develop measures to combine religious instruction with basic literacy, numeracy, vocational training, and life skills. The initiative aims to create a legal framework for the registration and supervision of schools while strengthening child protection to prevent exploitation. The committee will include representatives from government, traditional institutions, Islamic organizations, and child-rights groups to develop a roadmap for implementation and sustainable funding.
