Kano State government and NLC suspend planned strike

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended a planned three-day warning strike and peaceful protest in Kano State. The industrial action was originally intended to protest alleged plans by the state government to revert to an N18,000 minimum wage and recent salary deductions.

Following a meeting between Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and NLC representatives, the state government denied intentions to return to the old wage scale, reiterating its commitment to the N30,600 agreement signed in 2019. The parties agreed that March salary deductions would be refunded to workers alongside April or May salaries, depending on the increase in FAAC allocations.

A committee has been established to address remaining contentious issues. Additionally, the government committed to implementing the new N39,600 minimum wage at Kano State University of Science and Technology (KUST) Wudil and Yusuf Maitama Sule Universities. The resolution also includes provisions for retiree pensions and entitlements under the Kano State Pension Fund Trustee.
