Kano State implements N1.5bn mass wedding program for 1,500 couples
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has implemented a mass wedding program, known as Auren Gata, to support 1,500 low-income couples. The state government committed over N1.5 billion to the initiative, which aims to alleviate the financial burdens of marriage and promote social stability.
The support package provided to each couple includes N100,000 as a dowry and an additional N100,000 as seed capital for starting small businesses. To assist with the establishment of new homes, the government also provided household items such as beds, mattresses, furniture, and food supplies.
Before participating, all couples underwent a mandatory screening process managed by the Kano State Hisbah Board. This process included medical examinations for health safety, marriage counseling, and workshops to prepare them for marital responsibilities. The Governor urged the newlyweds to uphold the sanctity of marriage through patience, justice, and mutual respect in accordance with Islamic teachings.
