Kano State invests ₦1.5bn in mass wedding programme for 1,500 couples

The Kano State Government has invested ₦1.5 billion in its latest mass wedding programme, known as the Auren Gata initiative, to support 1,500 couples. The program aims to alleviate the financial burdens of marriage for vulnerable residents, including low-income individuals, widows, widowers, and divorcees.

Coordinated by the Kano State Hisbah Board, the initiative provides comprehensive support to beneficiaries. Each bride receives ₦200,000 for dowry and business support, along with household items such as a bed, mattress, wardrobe, and linens. Grooms receive items including fabric, a cap, rice, and cooking oil. Additionally, the government funded medical screenings for all participants to check for conditions such as HIV, hepatitis, and genotype compatibility to ensure the health of future families.

The ceremony, held at the Emir’s Palace mosque, featured Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II. This marks the second major mass wedding organized by the current administration, following a similar event in 2023.
