Kano State launches project to combat gender-based violence in agriculture

The Kano State Government has launched a new initiative to prevent and respond to gender-based violence (GBV) within the agricultural value chain. The project was established in collaboration with the African Enterprise Challenge Fund and the Development Research and Projects Centre.

Amina Sani, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs, launched the project and called on community leaders to end the stigmatization of GBV. She noted that silence prevents authorities from identifying victims and providing necessary support and protection.

The initiative coincides with existing state efforts to improve women's economic status. Under the Women Economic Empowerment Programme, the government currently provides monthly support of N50,000 to 5,200 women to assist with starting or expanding businesses.
