Kano State diphtheria outbreak kills over 50 children
A diphtheria outbreak in Kano State, Nigeria, has reportedly caused the deaths of more than 50 children, primarily in the Rano Local Government Area. Lawmakers in the Kano State House of Assembly raised the alarm during a plenary session, noting that the disease has been particularly severe in the Ridin and Sabuwar Kaura communities.
The outbreak appears to be spreading beyond Rano into the Kiru Local Government Area, with reported cases in Kwarin Dangora, Dangora town, and Yelwa. In response, lawmakers have called for the establishment of a coordinated emergency response committee to manage surveillance, treatment, and vaccination efforts across several local government areas, including Tudun Wada, Kibiya, Bunkure, and Bebeji.
Kano State officials have appealed to the Federal Government for an urgent supply of additional diphtheria vaccines to facilitate mass immunization. Meanwhile, the state's Majority Leader has urged the executive branch to activate the Kano State Health Protection Law to provide emergency healthcare and necessary containment measures.
