Kano State reports 11.3% decrease in out-of-school children

The Kano State Government has reported an 11.3 per cent reduction in the number of out-of-school children. Education Commissioner Ali Abubakar-Makoda announced the figure during a distribution of learning materials to 5,022 learners transitioning to formal education under the Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP).

ABEP is a European Union-funded initiative implemented by Plan International within three local government areas: Nassarawa, Kumbotso, and Gwale. Since its launch in 2024, the program has successfully integrated approximately 6,000 children into the formal school system.

Abubakar-Makoda attributed the high volume of out-of-school children to population pressure and an influx of people into the state. He credited the progress to the support of development partners and urged for the expansion of these interventions to additional local government areas to address resource gaps such as school uniforms and writing materials.
