Kano suspends Durbar processions amid royal procession tensions
The Kano State Government has suspended all Durbar processions and horse-riding activities within the Kano metropolis due to security concerns. The decision follows an emergency meeting of the State Security Council, aimed at preventing potential clashes, loss of life, and property destruction.
The suspension comes amid rising tension regarding two separate royal processions scheduled for Sunday, September 27, 2026. Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, and Aminu Ado Bayero, the 15th Emir, are both expected to lead processions through overlapping routes, including the Mandawari and Kofar Kwaru areas.
Security assessments indicated significant mobilization of supporters for both royal camps, raising fears of confrontations. The government has directed security agencies to enforce the restriction and has appealed to all stakeholders and residents to remain calm and law-abiding.
