Kanpur: 18-year-old woman dies after courtyard ground collapses

An 18-year-old woman, Yashi Savita, died following a ground subsidence accident in the Maharajpur area of Kanpur during the Raksha Bandhan festival. The incident occurred when the ground in her home's courtyard suddenly collapsed as she was walking toward her parents with a prayer plate.

Savita fell into a pit approximately 22 to 25 feet deep. Local authorities, including the fire brigade and rescue teams, conducted a challenging seven-hour operation to reach her, navigating unstable soil and the depth of the hole. Although she was eventually pulled from the pit and rushed to a hospital, medical professionals declared her dead upon arrival.

Preliminary reports suggest the collapse may be linked to an unsuccessful borewell drilled in the courtyard approximately three years ago, which may have weakened the underground structure. Recent rainfall may have further destabilized the soil in that area. Local police are investigating the exact cause of the structural failure.
