Kansai Electric Power considers joining nuclear fuel storage plan in Mutsu
Kansai Electric Power is in final adjustments to join an inter-operator cooperation plan to use an intermediate spent nuclear fuel storage facility in Mutsu, Aomori Prefecture. According to sources, Tohoku Electric Power is also expected to participate. The plan involves allowing power companies other than the facility's current owners, Tokyo Electric Power and Japan Nuclear Fuel, to transport spent fuel to the site.
Mutsu Mayor Tomoya Yamamoto has indicated a willingness to consider the entry of additional operators, a shift from previous opposition. This change in stance is driven by concerns over the city's fiscal health, as a reduction in expected fuel deliveries could lead to a revenue loss exceeding 20 billion yen. The city faces significant financial pressure, including the large-scale reconstruction of Mutsu General Hospital.
Mayor Yamamoto stated he intends to discuss the matter with citizens, questioning whether the city can manage its difficult financial situation without the intermediate storage facility. While Kansai Electric Power declined to comment on specific details, the proposal is expected to be formally presented to Mutsu City around September 18.
