Kansai International Airport highlighted by NASA satellite imagery

NASA satellite imagery has highlighted the massive scale of Japan’s Kansai International Airport (KIX), an engineering marvel located in Osaka Bay. Recognized as the world’s first airport built entirely on artificial islands, the facility was constructed between 1987 and 1994.

The project involved an immense investment of approximately 3 trillion yen and required the reclamation of 450 million cubic meters of earth and stone to create over 1,050 hectares of land. The infrastructure includes two runways (3,500m and 4,000m) and a terminal exceeding 305,000 square meters, all connected to the mainland via a 3.75km dual-level bridge for road and rail.

As a vital international aviation hub for western Japan, the airport operates 24/7. By May 2026, Kansai International Airport had served more than 600 million passengers, with 33 million travelers recorded in 2025 alone.
