Kansas City Chiefs prepare for season opener amid injury concerns

The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for their season opener against the Denver Broncos, focusing on key player availability and positional depth. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is targeting a return for Week 1, approximately nine months after suffering ACL and LCL tears. While Mahomes stated that preparing during training camp was ‘the goal’ to ensure readiness for the opener, head coach Andy Reid noted that the decision to play him depends on medical clearance and Mahomes' own assessment.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is also managing a shifting secondary due to various injuries. The unit is currently working through the absence of starting safeties Alohi Gilman and Chamarri Conner, as well as the limited availability of veteran cornerback L’Jarius Sneed due to a knee issue.
